Guardian Caps Make NFL Football Safer

guardian capsThe National Football League will allow players to wear Guardian Caps in the upcoming regular season. This is the first time the league has allowed players to do so. The league made it mandatory for specific positions to wear it during the 2022 preseason, expanding the utilization of the protective gear.

Wrapping a standard helmet with the cushioned, soft-shell Guardian Cap absorbs contact and reduces the impact of hard crashes and the likelihood of concussions. Upon their introduction in 2022, the NFL claimed that players wearing the Guardian Caps might mitigate the effects of head collisions by 10%. According to bookie pay per head experts, twenty percent is a reasonable estimate if every player used them.

The 2022 and 2023 seasons had almost the same number of player concussions: 213 in the former and six more in the latter. The number of concussions has been decreasing since 2018. According to the NFL, approximately 1.6 concussion examinations were performed per game in 2023. A concussion diagnosis was made approximately once every three to four assessments.

Guardian Caps to Prevent Concussions

According to NFL news reports, head trauma is the most common cause of concussions. The brain tissue is somewhat bruised as a result of this. A concussion can cause a variety of symptoms, including disorientation, lightheadedness, and even unconsciousness. In most cases, a concussion may be classified into one of three severity levels.

  1. Grade 1 - In the first grade, you could see someone called a bell ringer. For less than fifteen minutes, the player is disoriented or distracted. You won't experience a lapse in memory or unconsciousness.
  2. Grade 2 - In the second grade, symptoms, including nausea, forgetfulness, and ear ringing, are present with confusion.
  3. Grade 3 - A loss of consciousness is graded as grade 3.

As stated by the manufacturer, Guardian Caps add a cushioned, soft-shell layer to the exterior of the hard-shell helmet, which has been around for decades and can lessen the impact by as much as 33 percent. According to the NFL, there has been a 50% reduction in concussions since 2022 because of the mandated usage of Guardian Caps for running backs and linemen in preseason workouts.

Guardian won the NFL HeadHealthTECH Challenge in 2017. During 2020 NFL practices, several clubs experimented with using the Guardian Cap. Data and laboratory testing over a year showed that Guardian Caps were statistically much better than helmets alone. Therefore, the NFL approved their use for the 2021 season. Owners of the National Football League (NFL) announced in early 2022 that certain positions will be required to wear Guardian Caps during the first two weeks of training camp.

Future of Preventive Gear in the NFL

This year's helmet lineup includes the Guardian Cap and others that offer equal or even more excellent protection than previous helmet models when worn with the Guardian Cap.

The NFL and the NFLPA decided to let players choose from six different helmet styles that offer the same level of protection as the Guardian Caps during the required training camp sessions.
