Last night’s Winter Olympic women’s hockey matchup between team USA and Canada was not a disappointment. In an epic showdown, the final headline reads, US Women Hockey wins gold in shootout. For anyone watching the game 2018 Winter Olympic in PyeongChang, this hockey ending could not have been more thrilling.
Team USA was the favorite to win at -139 despite their 2-1 loss to Canada during the preliminary round. Canada despite being the +115 underdog certainly gave the online sportsbooks a sweat during the entire match.
This matchup between two of the greatest rivals in Winter Olympic Women’s hockey was well worth the wait. This win ended a 20 year old hockey gold medal drought for the United States breaking the Canadian team’s fourth straight gold medal win.
The winning goal in the shootout was made by Jocelyn Lamoureux-Davidson, a three times Olympic veteran. She scored against Canadian goalie, Shannon Szabados by faking a backhand shot.
When it came time for the Canadians side of the shootout, all of the pressure was on US goalie, Maddie Rooney. 20 years old Rooney who has been playing since the age of 9 did not disappoint as she blocked the last two Canadian shooters for a 3-2 victory over Canada. This has earned her the nickname of “Secretary of Defense” on her Wikipedia page.
During the medal ceremony, disappointment was clearly shown the faces of the Canadian team. Especially with Jocelyne Larocque who yanked off her silve medal right after it was placed on her neck. On the men’s side, team USA is out and but Canada is still in the run for gold.
