Injuries to the New England Patriots finally cost them this past weekend, as New England lost their first game in the season in an overtime loss at Denver. Losing the game wasn’t the worst part of the Patriots Sunday, as they still have a comfortable four-game lead in the AFC East over the New York Jets.
The worst part was yet another injury to the Patriots offense – this time watching Tight End Rob Gronkowski go down late in the fourth quarter. Adding that injury to the slew of missing receivers as well as RB Dion Lewis means Tom Brady now has to make due with a depleted receiving corps. It will be interesting to see if the Patriots try to win as many games as possible and risk more injuries, or simply pull back and try to remain healthy over the final weeks.
The online sportsbooks list the Pats as a big 10-point home favorite this Sunday against a fading Philadelphia team that has lost three straight.
With New England’s loss, the Carolina Panthers are now the last remaining undefeated team in the NFL. Carolina looked very good against this past Thanksgiving in an easy win and cover against the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas saw quarterback Tony Romo go down with another collarbone injury and he will be out for the rest of the season. Panthers are a seven-point road favorite this week at New Orleans.
The online sportsbooks are withholding pointspread on a few games this week dealing with quarterback injuries. Cleveland’s starting QB McCown went down in their MNF loss against Baltimore, and they face AFC North rival Cincinnati this week. The Bengals beat the Browns by 21 points a few weeks ago. Ben Roethlisberger is in concussion protocol and is listed as “questionable” for the Steelers Sunday Night Football matchup at home vs. the Colts.
Arizona isn’t get much publicity in the national media, but they enter this weekend with the second-best record in the NFC. Cardinals struggled a bit late against the 49ers but came through with a six-point road win (did not cover the spread as 7-point chalk). Arizona goes for their tenth win of the season this Sunday on the road at St. Louis against a Rams team that beat the Cards in Arizona earlier this year. Rams have lost four straight and are a 5.5-point home underdog.
While the Monday Night Football matchup of 3-8 Dallas against 5-6 Washington doesn’t look intriguing at first glance, this game has big playoff implications. Redskins are currently in control of the NFC East Division even with that losing record (has a tiebreaker over the Giants) and with a win against a Romo-less Cowboys team they could make a big step towards the playoffs. Washington is a 4.5-point home favorite – a line that seems pretty low considering the state of the Cowboys right now.
We’ll return next week to break down the top NFL games for Week 14 from an NFL betting perspective.
