For the benefit of those who will be playing the Super Bowl props or just the game itself, we'd like to present a tale of Super Bowls and the Heisman, considering that Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals has an opportunity to become the first quarterback to win a Heisman, a national collegiate championship and a Super Bowl crown.
In this instance, we're going to look back at the battle of Plunkett vs. Theismann. The Super Bowl is scheduled for Sunday at 6:30 PM ET at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA. The NFC champion Los Angeles Rams are posted as the four-point favorite in the Super Bowl odds over the Cincinnati Bengals, with the total on the game established at 48.5 points.

The 1970 Heisman Trophy was essentially a two-man race. You had a couple of quarterbacks involved; Jim Plunkett of Stanford was the ultimate winner of the award, but he was being pushed hard by Joe Theismann of Notre Dame, who was considered enough of a contender that he actually changed the pronunciation of his name to rhyme with "Heisman." maybe his family wasn't too crazy about it, but it was the very strong suggestion of Roger Valdiserri, who was the Notre Dame publicity director. It didn't do him enough good, as he finished second.
Both of these men beat the Super Bowl odds by going on to quarterback Super Bowl winners - Plunkett piloted the wild card Oakland Raiders to a victory in Super Bowl XV, where they routed the Philadelphia Eagles as a favorite in the Superbowl odds, while Theismann won Super Bowl XVII with the Redskins. The two crossed paths in Tampa in Super Bowl XVIII.
The Redskins were widely perceived to be an even better team that next season. They went 14-2 on the regular season and set a record for most points scored in a season. Theismann was named the league's MVP. They came into the game with the Raiders, who had since moved to Los Angeles, as a three-point favorite in the Superbowl odds. They had already beaten the Raiders during the season with a furious late comeback.
The game turned out to be disastrous for Theismann, if for no other reason than he threw one of the most infamous passes in Super Bowl history. Trailing 14-3, the Redskins got the ball at their own 12-yard line. With just twelve seconds left in the half, they could have elected to run out the clock. Instead, they decided to run a screen pass, for which the Raiders were totally prepared. Theismann threw the ball into the waiting hands of linebacker Jack Squirek, who made the short jaunt into the end zone, for all intents and purposes closing things out. Marcus Allen had a 74-yard run that put Los Angeles up 35-9 at the end of three quarters, and they tacked on a field goal by Chris Bahr to win and cover by 34 points in the Super Bowl odds.
That was the first time in the history of the Super Bowl where the starting quarterbacks had been 1-2 in the Heisman Trophy balloting.
But here we have another first. Not only can Burrow accomplish an unprecedented feat (we mentioned that already), but this is the first time since the common (NFL-AFL) draft that two quarterbacks who have been #1 overall picks in the draft have duked it out.
And not surprisingly, they are 1-2 when it comes to who is going to win the MVP of the game at BetAnySports. Here's the list of the those priced at +5000 or lower:
Matthew Stafford, Rams QB +100
Joe Burrow, Bengals QB +220
